Porcelain Veneers

Rendering of jaw with porcelain veneer on toothAt Bagley Dental, we offer several cosmetic procedures designed to vastly improve your smile! One procedure involves the placement of porcelain veneers to cover the front surfaces of your teeth. Porcelain veneers are extremely-thin, custom-fit shells that are made to improve the aesthetics of your smile. Depending on your circumstance, you may need a whole set of veneers, or only one. Regardless of your situation, we usually limit the use of veneers to your anterior (front) teeth. We use porcelain for veneers rather than resin composite. Porcelain is more durable and aesthetically-pleasing than the alternative.

What Can Porcelain Veneers Fix?

Porcelain veneers are designed to fix some cosmetic issues, some of which include:
•  Teeth that are discolored after the use of tetracycline, excessive fluoride exposure, root canal treatment, or large fillings. A porcelain veneer will cover the discolored tooth and brighten your smile.
•  Teeth that have been worn down due to bruxism.
•  Teeth that are fractured, chipped, or broken.
•  Teeth with gaps in between them. A veneer can be sized to fill the space.
•  Teeth that are irregularly shaped, uneven, or misaligned.

The Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers offer some benefits over other cosmetic procedures. For starters, they provide a natural tooth appearance. They can also be used to make your smile appear whiter. Many patients choose porcelain because it is also resistant to stains.

If you have sensitive gums, porcelain veneers may be the best option. Gum tissue tolerates porcelain much better than other materials. Porcelain veneers may also be the best option if you are looking for a more conservative approach to cosmetic change. Unlike dental crowns, which require a complete reshaping of the enamel, veneers conserve the majority of your natural enamel.

Porcelain Veneer Procedure

The veneer procedure is irreversible, which is why your active participation is a must. During your initial consultation, J. Andrew Bagley DDS or W. Ryan Bagley DDS will review the ins and outs of porcelain veneers. Be sure to ask questions, voice concerns, and explain your desired results. We may also take some x-rays and impressions of your teeth to develop a preliminary model. The goal is to give you a basic understanding of what your new smile will look like.

Once we have agreed on a treatment plan, we can prepare the tooth. During preparation, we will remove a very small portion of enamel from the front surface of your tooth. The amount removed will be nearly equal to the thickness of your veneer. We may use local anesthetic if you have sensitivity issues. Once your tooth is reshaped, we will make a molded impression. This impression will be sent to our dental laboratory, where they will use it to fabricate your porcelain veneer.

Once your veneer is ready, we can schedule your final appointment. During your final appointment, we will bond the veneer to your tooth. We may need to trim or adjust the veneer to achieve the proper fit. Then, the veneer will be permanently bonded to the tooth using a special cement and curing light. After the veneer is in place, we may ask you to return for a follow-up appointment.
